Between 12 and 14, young people undergo one of the most profound transformations of their lives. This is the age identified by the IB itself as the moment when global, intellectual, personal, physical, creative, and social needs converge in extraordinary ways. Young people at this stage are capable of abstract reasoning, nuanced analysis, and genuine philosophical inquiry. They are developing their own moral compass, forming their identity, and feeling a growing awareness of the gap between the world as it is and the world as it should be.

The INVENTORS programme is built for exactly this moment. It draws on the IB Middle Years Programme and the Cambridge Lower Secondary framework, two of the most rigorous and internationally respected educational standards in the world, and enriches them with Nathalie Rosfelder's pedagogical vision to create something genuinely distinctive.

A curriculum designed for this stage of life
The IB Middle Years Programme is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, and this is precisely the spirit that animates everything we do in the INVENTORS program.
​
The Cambridge Lower Secondary framework builds on this by emphasizing core subjects such as English, mathematics, and science while promoting global perspectives, critical thinking, self-discipline, independence, and lifelong learning skills.

Together these two frameworks give our students something rare: academic rigor and genuine intellectual depth, combined with a vision of education that sees the whole person and prepares them for a world that demands both competence and conscience.

Eight subject areas, explored with depth and connection
The MYP curriculum encompasses eight subject groups: language acquisition, language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. At UNITED SPARK EDUCATION, we organize these into a coherent, interdisciplinary learning experience where no subject is taught in isolation.

In mathematics, students move into algebra, geometry, probability, and statistical reasoning, developing the logical thinking and analytical precision that underpin so much of modern life.
In language and literature, they write with sophistication and analyze texts critically, developing their own distinctive voice and learning to communicate with both clarity and power.
In science, organized around biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences, they design real experiments, interpret data, and engage with the ethical dimensions of scientific progress.
In individuals and societies, they explore history, geography, economics, and philosophy as interconnected lenses on the human condition.
In design, they apply engineering and creative thinking to real problems.
In the arts, they express complex ideas through multiple media.
In physical and health education, they develop well-being, teamwork, and self-awareness.
And throughout all of it, language acquisition ensures that multilingualism remains a living practice and a genuine asset.
Concept-driven learning and global contexts
One of the most distinctive features of the MYP, which we fully embrace, is its concept-driven approach. The MYP identifies 16 key interdisciplinary concepts that reach beyond individual subject groups, giving students big ideas to explore that matter across disciplines.
These concepts, combined with six global contexts, ensure that learning is never abstract or disconnected.

The six global contexts that frame the curriculum are identities and relationships, personal and cultural expression, orientations in space and time, scientific and technical innovation, fairness and development, and globalization and sustainability.
Every unit of study is framed by one of these contexts, giving students an immediate sense of why what they are learning matters and how it connects to the world they are about to step into more fully.

Approaches to learning: learning how to learn
​
At the heart of the MYP is a set of approaches to learning that help students learn how to learn by developing research skills, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management. At this age, these are not supplementary skills. They are the foundation of everything.

In the INVENTORS program, students develop advanced metacognitive strategies, learning to plan and manage complex extended projects, identify their own knowledge gaps, seek out resources independently, and revise their thinking honestly when evidence demands it.
They develop emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, learning to navigate disagreement constructively, lead with empathy, and collaborate productively across cultural and cognitive differences.
They build digital literacy and technology ethics, learning to use powerful tools with both competence and critical awareness.
And they engage seriously with systems thinking, understanding how social, environmental, economic, and technological systems are interconnected and how change in one area produces cascading effects across all others.

The Personal Project: a defining milestone
​
A cornerstone of the MYP experience is the Personal Project, a long-term independent endeavor in which students determine what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, discover what they will need to know to complete the project, and define their own criteria for success. This is not a school exercise. It is a rehearsal for the kind of self-directed, purposeful work that defines a meaningful adult life.

In the INVENTORS programme, every student undertakes a significant Personal Project over an extended period, supported by a dedicated mentor and assessed against internationally recognized criteria.
The project can take any form: a research investigation, a creative work, a community initiative, a technological innovation, or a social enterprise. What matters is that it is genuinely the student's own, driven by their passions, their questions, and their emerging sense of what they want to contribute to the world.

Thematic projects that reach beyond the classroom
Alongside the Personal Project, our thematic projects give students the opportunity to apply their learning to challenges that genuinely matter, in collaboration with peers, experts, and communities.

The Future We Want challenges students to investigate a global issue of their choosing, from climate change and food security to digital rights, gender equality, or mental health, research it with genuine academic rigor, and present a concrete, evidence-based proposal for change to a panel of real experts and community members.
Architects of Tomorrow brings together mathematics, science, engineering, and sustainability as students design a fully conceived future community, justifying every decision with data, ethical reasoning, and long-term thinking.
The Human Story invites students to explore a significant historical moment or current humanitarian issue through multiple disciplinary lenses, producing a documentary, investigative podcast, or multimedia exhibition that reaches a genuine audience beyond the school.
My Voice, My World develops advanced language, rhetoric, and digital communication as students build a compelling case around an issue they care about and launch a real awareness campaign.
And Innovation Lab challenges students to identify a genuine problem, apply design thinking through multiple iterative cycles, and present their innovation with a full account of their process, their failures, their revisions, and what they learned at every stage.

Assessment that serves growth
​
MYP assessment standards are consistent around the world. Teachers structure varied and valid assessment tasks so that students can demonstrate achievement according to objectives defined by the IB, assessed against established criteria rather than against the work of other students. This criterion-referenced approach, which we fully adopt, means that every student is measured against a standard of excellence, not ranked against their peers.

Assessment is not limited to final exams. The framework encourages continuous evaluation through progression tests and checkpoint assessments that track student growth and highlight areas for improvement. In the INVENTORS program, assessment is portfolio-based and reflective, centered on the quality of thinking, the integrity of the process, and the growth demonstrated over time.
Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint assessments provide internationally benchmarked external validation of each student's progress in English, mathematics, and science, giving families a clear and credible picture of where their child stands in relation to students around the world.

Values and qualities we cultivate

At 12 to 14, values become convictions. We cultivate intellectual courage, the willingness to defend a position with evidence and change one's mind when faced with better arguments. We develop leadership with humility, helping students inspire others without ego or domination. We nurture resilience and grit, teaching students that the most meaningful achievements require sustained effort and the wisdom to learn from failure. We build empathy at scale, moving beyond individual relationships to a genuine understanding of systemic injustice and collective responsibility. We encourage entrepreneurial initiative, the confidence to see a problem and decide to do something about it. And we celebrate intellectual curiosity as a practice to be cultivated for life.

Between 12 and 14, students have increasingly distinct intellectual profiles, personal passions, and learning needs. Our program honors this diversity. Learning pathways are highly personalized, with teachers working closely with each student to identify their strengths and their growing edges.
Projects are designed to be engaged at multiple levels of depth and complexity. And our approach to assessment ensures that every student is genuinely challenged and recognized for the unique quality of their thinking and their growth.

Parents as essential partners
As young people move through early adolescence, they need both greater autonomy and continued engagement from the adults who care about them. We help families navigate this balance thoughtfully, providing guidance on how to stay connected without hovering, how to ask the right questions, and how to support a young person through the frustrations and breakthroughs that come with genuinely demanding work.
Through our parent portal, you have full visibility into your child's projects, progress, and teacher observations.
Regular three-way conversations between the student, their teacher, and their family ensure that the student's voice remains central and that support is always tailored to what each family needs.

Why it matters
At 12 to 14, language is no longer just a subject. It is the primary tool through which students think, argue, create, and engage with the world. A student who can read critically, write with precision and voice, and speak with clarity and conviction is equipped for every academic and professional challenge ahead.

Pedagogical methods
Socratic seminars and structured academic debates, independent and collaborative writing workshops, author studies and literary analysis, investigative journalism projects, public speaking and presentation to authentic audiences, close reading of literary and non-literary texts, peer editing and revision cycles.

Assessment
Extended essays and argumentative writing portfolios, oral presentations and debate performance, literary analysis tasks, reading response journals, peer and self-assessment, and continuous formative observation focused on the development of voice, precision, and critical thinking.
